Aishwarya Rai: Hullabaloo In Times Of Viral Flu

A lot of hue and hoopla has been raised recently with reports claiming that Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai has been throwing starry tantrums at a recent award function in Singapore. Lots of negative reports have been written about her stating that she threw airs at Singapore as she came on stage for rehearsals at her own preferred time thus disturbing the schedules of others.

However, Aishwarya has now set the records straight by issuing a clarification statement citing that she was very unwell at the time. She was suffering from viral flu but despite her personal discomfort she vehemently maintains that she didn't change the schedule as is being wrongly reported.

Aishwarya prioritised the award function over her discomfort and hence didn't request for a change in schedule. In fact, she went for her rehearsal late at night when the others had finished with their respective rehearsals. She, in fact, urged the choreographer to send back the dance troupe since they had been rehearsing all day. Aishwarya requested a couple of assistants to show her the performance.

Next day, due to last-minute change in timings, she couldn't find a slot to rehearse on stage and hence, practiced in her room with the aid of a dancer. Even though she was ill, she honoured the request of the organisers and walked the red carpet where a slew of media men were waiting for her.

Later on, she even performed her act on the stage. Bunty Walia, MD of GS Entertainment, also states that Aishwarya fulfilled all her professional commitments and there was no unprofessionalism from her side despite the fact that she was suffering from viral flu.

State Bank net rises 14% to Rs 2,828 crore in Dec quarter

India’s largest lender, the State Bank of India or SBI reported a 14 % growth in net profit for the third quarter, beating analysts estimates but signalled that margins could be under pressure in the next quarter. The bank which posted a net profit of `2,828 crore in the quarter to December 2010 has also said that it has not made any provisions for special home loans, defined as teaser loans by the RBI while computing this.

SBI chairman OP Bhatt has said that the bank’s special loans cannot be classified as a teaser loan scheme. The state run bank has provided more against bad loans, a record high it says but some analysts were unhappy with the quality of earnings reported.

He told reporters on Saturday that the bank would try to maintain its net interest margins or NIM which is the difference between the average cost of funds and the yield on loans or advances given the challenges of loan growth. “Credit growth is not robust. We may not be able to sustain 20% credit growth target and it could be 18% for full year,” he said. Bhatt may be right considering that the bank would have to loans aggregating `55,000 crore loan this quarter to top the target for advances. In fact, he said that the bank may lower the loan growth target for next fiscal.

The bank which controls a quarter of both loans and deposits in the banking sector reported this quarter that its bank loan book rose 22% to `7,39,971 crore on a year on year basis. Loan growth in the first nine months of the year was up 15%. Net interest or core income rose 43% to `9,050 crore mainly due to a spurt in loans. The growth in loans aggregated `46,747 crore in the third quarter alone. Bhatt however said that the challenge would be in sustaining this. “How much of it is sustainable is to be seen,” he said.

Provisions for bad loans in the third quarter rose from `514 crore to `1,632 crore over the year ago period. The higher provisions helped the bank to improve its provision coverage ratio to 64%. Bhatt said that the bank had sought time till March 2012 to meet a provision coverage of 70%, mandated by the RBI.

India capable of winning World Cup: Gavaskar

Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar believes India has a "balanced" side for the 2011 World Cup and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men have the "capability" of winning the coveted tournament and breaking the jinx of a host country not lifting the title.

"The Indian squad has got a terrific blend of experience and youth and it also has got a good balance, good feel about it," Gavaskar said here.

"I think this Indian team has got a terrific chance of breaking the jinx of the host country not winning the World Cup. I believe this team has got the capability of winning the World Cup," Gavaskar said.

The former skipper, who is in the city on a private visit, said the Indian team has been playing "some very good cricket" over the last year and a half.

He said Indians should extend their full support to the team and not "discourage" the players by "talking about selections."

Gavaskar, however, pointed out that the one weakness he sees in the team is in the fielding.

"There are certain bowlers in the team who are not exactly fleet-footed. That can make a little bit of difference but if they are used shrewdly by the captain. I don't see too much of a problem," he said.

The 2011 World Cup begins on February 19 and is being hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Gavaskar said playing on home turf will work in favour of the men in blue since the 15-member squad would be aware of the local conditions like weather, pitches as well as have the overwhelming support of the public.

Gavaskar added that while the "pluses (of India playing on home turf) overcome the minuses", the "expectation of the public" could distract the players.

He said unlike the previous three editions, when Australia was the dominant side and a firm favourite, "the 2011 World Cup is going to be a very open World Cup.

"There are other teams who can spring a surprise and who are capable of lifting the cup this time around. It is really a format that rewards form on the day of the match. There could be a situation where a good team could just have one of those off days," he said.

"It will be crucial for a team to maintain the intensity and bring out its best. Whichever team feels better than the other team is going to make the cut," Gavaskar added.
